Re: Filled - The Way it Starts
Thanks, I'm a little leery of writing her since the season 2 finale. I just don't know what to do with her.

Re: Filled - The Way it Starts
Yeah, me neither. I don't know if we're going to have her back - perhaps they think they don't need her now that Neal has Sara. But yeah, I don't know what to do with her either. I never really warmed to her to begin with, though I didn't really object to her in any way, but then her little speech about lost treasure at the end of the ep gave me ooky feelings. I understand that he was her grandpa and that's how she thinks of him first, but she so clearly didn't have a clue about any of the other implications.

Re: Filled - The Way it Starts
Ooky feelings: this is it exactly. It's not so much that she loves her grandfather, or that she's willing to make off with the treasure. She's a thief, and a very selfish human being, and I can see it of her, and of Neal, who is able to ignore the moral ramifications of something unless it's shoved in his face. Her characterization in the season finale though typifies what's wrong with this whole arc. It's not the premise, it's the way none of the characters say, react to her telling them that her grandfather fought for Hitler in WWII. She had no hesitation in saying it. It's like it was just another conflict and they were just the guys on the other side. The way they write Alex in that episode makes it clearer than anything else that the writers just don't get it.

Re: Filled - The Way it Starts
Yes, exactly. I mean, I study German literature and speak German and have lived in Germany, and I understand very well that it was very possible to serve in the army without being a member of the Nazi Party, and there was also a pretty hefty draft going on; if you were male and able-bodied, you served, whether you believed in what Hitler was doing or not. But even knowing all of this, the way it was handled didn't work for me at all. Alex would have grown up and been educated in the U.S., and I can't believe that she's so ignorant of history that she wouldn't have at least complicated feelings about it. *sigh* Writer!fail.

Re: Filled - The Way it Starts
This is why in real life, I find out that a German or Austrian of that age fought in the war or was in the Hitler Youth, I'm like "Yeah, and?" At the end of the war, there were twelve-year-olds being pressed into service. There are Nazis, and I mean actual members of the party, in my family tree, which is even more awkward than it might otherwise be, because we're Jewish, so I've been in the situation of explaining about my dad's family and my step grandfather's family. It's always awkward. It wasn't awkward for her, which is Writer!fail.
